We have a bit of catching up to do......

Sorry it's been a while, we have been busy haberdashers (still) moving things around in the shop, making and sending Mother's Day orders, helping lovely customers, unpacking LOADS of new stock, deliberating about where we should be directing our energies, setting up our online store and a little daydreaming when we can fit it in.
The upshot of it all is the the store is looking lovely and full of gorgeous things, the online store is about halfway there and we have reluctantly decided with the exception Kleins Perfumery and Absinthe (new outlet for delicious Frank and Mint Linens in Albert Park) to discontinue wholesaling our range of hand made items. The store is just getting too busy to keep it all going at once and we would rather be making lots of special things for l'uccello instead. I have so many ideas percolating away and not enough time to experiment and have a bit of fun creating, sometimes you just need a bit of reset to get back on track.

Lots of lovely gifts for Mum, pretty note books hand printed in India, these lovely Vintage carnations are over 70 years old, our new favourite book Paper Bliss by Skye Rogers, full of beautiful paper based projects. Very exciting news!! Skye will be coming to l'uccello to give a workshop on projects from her gorgeous book on the 6th of June, I will post all the details by Friday. In the meantime please ring the store for all of the times etc, be quick very limited places!

Fabulous new range of bags made from vintage Indian textiles

Divine new range of flat silk embroidery threads in a great range of colours

A stunning new collection of Sophie Digard arrived today, as always the colours in the photos don't do justice to these little works of art, they are the loveliest autumnal shades including greens, blues and earthy tones, exquisite.

A huge new shipment of fascinating creative and traditional kokeshi have just been unpacked, a number of them are by master craftsmen in a very distinctive different styles,(including Princess Leah up the top)

Fun new products from TMOD, a young Australian team create these clever and whimsical paper products. They include Scratchy cards which have areas covered with the same material scratchy cards have, the recipient has the fun scratching them off to reveal hidden messages or images. Pass the parcel is perfect for your next party, each layer contains a different party hat. Finally the Snail mail paper aeroplane, a paper aeroplane to send a letter on, accepted by Australia Post in its folded shape, too cute!

The Divine Ms Melia finished her first round of classes a couple a weeks ago and all of the ladies had a ball. The great news is Robyne is keen to do more classes through the year, we are just working out when and what, I will post the details asap. The last class coincided with our 2nd birthday HAPPY BIRTHDAY to us, hip hip hooray! So we celebrated with sweeties from Brunetti and a little bit of bubbles, yum

GIVE AWAY time......
Just so you don't feel left out this huge collection of Valdani hand dyed threads, kindly given to us by the lovely Stephanie and Lindsay from Maytime to go to the first lucky person to post a comment. To enter you need to be a follower of our blog, and the question is what does l'uccello mean to you?
There will also be 4 mystery runners up prizes too, I will not post any comments until Friday so you will have to wait to see if you are a lucky winner, good luck!

Well I did warn you we had a lot to get through, but it's always fun and a such a pleasure to share all of these lovely things with you, have a great week x

PS I am trying to come to terms with Facebook, we now have a page and we have a Pinterest board as well, called luccello loves vintage. I will work out how to add all the buttons and bits to make it easier to find them......don't even start me on twitter and then there is Polyvore.... now I am going back to my hexigans!

Open Anzac Day

We will be open 10am - 6pm as usual on Anzac Day, please note the lift might be turned on so visitors will probably have to visit via the stairs.
I'll be thinking of my Grandpa and so many others like him as the parade passes by below our windows.
Have a relaxing day off if you have one, and stay cosy, it's so chilly all of a sudden.
Will post lots of news in a couple of days. x

Colour and movement

Well hello, sorry to be a while checking in, it has been a very busy time since Easter, school holidays, the annual quilt convention and I decided in the middle of it to entirely move the shop around. And I really do mean entirely, I decided on a bit of a whim to see if the giant 4 metre long Harveys counter might look better running the other way in front of the French doors. This meant moving just about every other piece of furniture also, and did it look better??.... of course NOT!! So anyway we now have more shelves for fabric (filled to overflowing almost immediately) and a new and almost complete set for our ever expanding range of ribbons, lovely.
We have had so many new stock arrivals I can't keep up, the most special delivery however was made by Mr Harvey himself. Two big heavy boxes of superb John James needles, I don't suppose he thought after packing up their haberdashery store and lugging all the remaining stock away that he would have to bring it back so soon. Harveys was a Melbourne institution for over a hundred years selling all manner of tailoring and dress making supplies, and when Mr Harvey retired last year we bought his store counter, and now we have a wide range of his John James stock too.
Sunday I made it to the quilt convention, mainly to pick up a delivery of gorgeous new Yuwa fabrics from a supplier, but I some how managed to come away with a giant stash of new pieces of mostly civil war fabrics and linens, I made a bee line Quilters Barn and Threadbare as I rarely get up to Castlemaine these days.
I am off to Queenscliff in the morning to help Mrs Sew and Sew (superb crewel embroiderer and teacher) and her group of ladies set up a fund raiser exhibition and sale of embroidery and other lovely things. I will update the details tomorrow as I have left the flyer at the shop, if you are in the neighbourhood make sure you pop in for a visit.

So many beautiful arrivals form France this week, Victorian silk brocade ribbons, vintage Swiss silk treads, rustic linen sackcloth, a fine antique embroidered monogram linen sheet, rolls of lovely pink vintage ribbon, huge reels of antique metallic gold thread and more spools of silk from Marseilles.

Great new vintage French buttons

Gorgeous new fabrics from Yuwa.

Lovely new Athill range from Moda

New delivery of this superb book on Lanvin, so beautiful I almost can't look at it. Teamed up here with some of our vintage ribbons in the same colours from the same era, too lovely!

Have a gorgeous week x

Ps. does the new photo format work for you? are they too big, too small, take too long to load?? Just trying a few things out and would love feedback, especially if they make it less pleasent to visit.
Thanks!

Easter at l'uccello

Easter trading hours:
Closed Good Friday
Open Saturday 10am - 4pm
Closed Sunday as usual
Open Monday 10am - 6pm

Wow, it has been such a crazy time lately, we have finally sent out our new range of scented pillows and sachets to Kleins Perfumery. After a couple of little disasters, (I won't bore you with the details, let's just say measure twice, cut once would have been sound advice) we have now sent out the first of our winter stock, it is always so satisfying to see them all boxed up and ready to go. To celebrate the launch we have done a l'uccello themed window at Kleins, if you go past there may be quite a few things in the window you'll recognise.

The reflection on the window made it very hard to get nice pictures so I took the odd one from the side and from the back.

Shameless plug, Kleins have a fabulous website, www.kleinsperfumery.com.au

The Perfumery is looking a little l'uccello inside too, this store is so lovely it really is a must visit whenever you are in the neighbourhood.

My absolute favourite scented candles, Cire Trudon, divine scents from this historic French candle company.

Meanwhile the store has been busy with lovely customers, gorgeous new stock arrivals (so many we don't know quite where to put it all) and slow but steady progress on the online store.
Pictured above are some beautiful new antique and vintage crocheted pieces, lovely fine filet lace and some hand printed pictures, these lovely images have been printed on the pages of an antique dictionary.

Hand made pure wool felt shapes, balls flowers and pebbles in various sizes, even liquorice all sorts

Great new paper crafting products, alphabet stamps, "caramel" erasers and various boxes of vintage inspired stickers.

Not to mention the mountain of new fabric that is arriving, including these gorgeous ranges, this one is Playtime from Moda

This range is so cute, from Walnut Hill Farm

This one is from the civil war reproduction range Friendship, produced by Moda.

New Dresden paper bunnies, perfect for decorating Easter gifts.

Have a great week, hope the easter bunny is bountiful for you. x

Accoutrements for Ladies

I love the word accoutrement and it seems perfect for the beautiful, rare and amusing arrivals this week, including Victorian enamel buttons, paper scraps, antique lace, trims and millinery supplies.
It has been a fabulous week, busy with lots of lovely visitors who read the article in last weeks Age about l'uccello. Also a quite humbling one too, with very kind, sweet letters and anonymous little gifts of lace arriving in the mail and the generosity of others who visited the store. So thank you to all our customers, you really are an inspiration and we are very grateful for your custom.
The best quote of the week came from a a patient husband who described l'uccello as a bit like a Bunnings for women, gorgeous!

Vintage millinery trims, exquisite Victorian enamel buttons, probably the best we have ever had, antique sewing tools, beautiful fine French cotton lace and lovely dark lustrous metallic lace and braid.

More wonderful buttons including this set of steel and mother of pearl buttons and the stunning boxed set of lithograph buttons which are now part of my private collection.

Boxed sets of Art Nouveau oyster shells and diminutive enamel buttons

Gorgeous new selection of original Victorian paper scraps (well spotted by Miss Pen Pen, many thanks!)

Including this full set of anthropomorphic animals, some people think they are a bit spooky but I love them.

Update on the crazy patchwork classes with Robyne Melia, only 2 places left so if you are keen to join get in quick.

Have super weekend, hope the Grand Prix doesn't drive you mad X
